About Me

An educational administrator and teacher, Sylvia Atkinson has served in leadership positions in a number of Independent School Districts across the state of Texas. At key points in her various roles as Special Education Instructor, Adjunct Professor, Campus Liaison, Human Resources Administrator, Executive Director for Human Resources, and most recently, Superintendent of Schools, Sylvia Atkinson has demonstrated her ability to adapt and customize her administrative approach to best serve the needs of her community. One example of Ms. Sylvia Atkinsons willingness to adapt is illustrated in her embracing of new technologies in the classroom.

During her time as Socorro Independent School Districts Superintendent of Schools, Sylvia Atkinson is credited with the creation of the District Initiative on Student Technology Outreach. This initiative, put forth during the 2007-2008 school year, allowed surplus computers to be sent to households in the community for student and parent use. Sylvia Atkinson also created The Socorro School House, an online curriculum management portal aimed at facilitating collaboration between district educators in an effort to incorporate teaching ideas at all levels of the administration.

From 2002 to 2005, Sylvia Atkinson served as the Superintendent of Schools of the Los Fresnos Independent School District. During this time, Ms. Atkinson created the Los Fresnos Districts first Technology Academy. This Academy, directed at the Districts 9th graders, introduced young members of the community to the latest technology, even offering certification in software and technical areas. This rare opportunity for recognition among young students is just one example of Sylvia Atkinsons continual struggle to provide for students exceptional opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities and excel on both a personal and academic level.

Sylvia Atkinson has served as a member of the Teacher Quality Enhancement Program in collaboration with the United States Department of Educations Office of Post Secondary Education. She has received numerous state awards, is a noted academic administrator, and a strong advocate for student success and community involvement.
