As a respected physician assistant, Mikal Smoker possesses over 25 years of experience in the field of health care. After earning her Bachelor of University Studies and Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1985, she furthered her education and training. At the University of New Mexico, Mikal Ann Smoker graduated with a Master of Science in Health Education in 1993 before participating in a postgraduate pre-physician assistant program at Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (currently Central New Mexico Community College). In 2001, she graduated from The University of Utah School of Medicine with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies.
As a licensed physician assistant and board-certified medical technologist, Mikal Ann Smoker began her career in medicine and health care as an Office Assistant for Family Practice Associates in Raton, New Mexico. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she worked as a Microbiology Supervisor and Medical Technologist Generalist at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services. She continued her role as a Medical Technologist in hematology and chemistry for the UNM Hospitals, Lovelace medical laboratories and for Lovelace Health System.
From 1994 to 1999, Mikal Ann Smoker started teaching and lecturing at the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute as a Clinical Laboratory Instructor. She balanced her time as a Medical Hematology Technologist for New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants, Ltd. After obtaining her Masters degree and license, Mikal Smoker joined the Department of Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City as a Physician Assistant. From 2002 to 2004, she worked in the inpatient and outpatient wards and also served as Associate Faculty with the physician assistant program at the University of Utah.
