Commitment to the community of Peoria, Illinois, is a hallmark of Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church. Douglas Handrich serves as the Pastor of Holy Cross and provides spiritual leadership, guidance, and the teachings of Christ to his congregation. In addition, the church administers the Holy Sacraments of Baptism and the Lords Supper. Pr. Handrichs teachings are based on the Sacred Scriptures as interpreted by the Lutheran Confessions in the Book of Concord in 1580. Holy Cross welcomes residents of Peoria and others to worship services. Pr. Handrich offers instruction for those who want to join in the Lords Supper with the congregation. In addition to shepherding his congregants, Pr. Handrich works as the Executive Director of Child Care Services of the Holy Cross Lutheran Preschool & Child Care. This child care center, licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, is considered one of the best in the Peoria area and has been in operation for more than 20 years. The center serves up to 155 children from 6 weeks to 12 years of age and operates on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Children receive breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack; attend field trips to interesting local sites; join their families on Family Fun Nights; and share a library of more than 9,000 books. Children between the ages of two and five also attend preschool, and one of the highlights of the school year is the graduation ceremony for the five-year-olds. The congregation at Holy Cross in Peoria seeks to remain faithful to Gods Word and to the Lutheran Confessions. Members of the church are committed to each other, their community, and to the teachings of Pastor Handrich. Holy Cross is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America (ELDoNA), a group of like-minded churches organized in 2006. Pr. Handrich and Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church joined the diocese in May 2008.
