My Experience

Gregory J. Johnson Mr. Johnson graduated cum laude from Minnesota State University Mankato in 1985 with a Business Administration degree in finance and accounting. Four years later, he graduated magna cum laude (in the top 3% of his class) from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1989, he accepted a position with the Arthur, Chapman & McDonough law firm, an automobile insurance defense firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Johnson focused his practice on insurance coverage matters and automobile, rental and dealership claims. In 1994, Mr. Johnson founded a litigation defense firm, Johnson & van Vliet, P.A., where he was the majority owner and served as managing partner for 15 years. In 2009, after 20 years of practice, Mr. Johnson founded GJohnson Law PLLC, a civil litigation practice focusing on complex insurance coverage disputes, consumer finance services litigation, sports law and Native American rights law. Mr. Johnson is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating for Ethical Standards and Legal Ability bestowed by the organization and has been designated a Super Lawyer by Minnesota Law & Politics on several occasions. A prolific writer and speaker, Mr. Johnson has authored numerous publications and is a regular speaker at legal seminars. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, National Association of Defense Counsel, Sports Lawyer Association, Minnesota Automobile Dealership Association, Native American Rights Fund, First Nations Development Corporation (Circle of Friends) and the Defense Research Institute. A skilled appellate attorney, Mr. Johnson has appeared before the Minnesota Court of Appeals, Minnesota Supreme Court and Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on numerous occasions, prevailing in over 80% of appeals to date. While based in Minnesota, he has served as a consultant to insurers on claims across the country. The firm is located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area, conveniently located within 20 minutes of Minneapolis (Hennepin County), St. Paul (Ramsey County) and Hastings (Dakota County)the three largest state court districts in the metropolitan area. Mr. Johnson practices in both federal and state court and is licensed in both state and federal court as well as the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Johnson has worked with numerous self-insured entities and businesses and a variety of insurance companies and third-party administrators including: AIG, AXIS, Berkley Risk, Cambridge, Chrysler, Cincinnati, Clarendon, Corporate Claims Service, Cunningham Lindsey, Deep South, ELCO Adminstrative Services, EMCAS, EPIC, ERAC, Federated, First Mercury, Fleming & Hall, Firemans Fund Risk Management, Gallagher Basset, General Star, GMAC, Gryphon, Gulf, Hartford, Highlands, John Deere, Legion, Midwest Family, Motors, Murdoch Claims Management, North American Risk Services, Prudential, United Fire & Casualty, Unitrin, USF&G, Reliance, Sentry, TIG, Wausau, Wells Fargo Insurance Services, West Bend, Universal and Zurich. He has also represented over 100 automobile dealerships in the Twin Cities metropolitan area over the past twenty years. Over the period of 2000 to 2009, Mr. Johnson coached eight youth football teams and three all-association teams for the Eastview Athletic Association (EVAA) in Apple Valley, Minnesota. In 2002, Mr. Johnson and David Puppe started the traveling football program for middle-school athletes for EVAA. The following year, Mr. Johnson brought together representatives from several cities in the Twin Cities metropolitan area to create a traveling football league, the Junior Lake South Football Conference, which included teams from Eastview, North St. Paul, Mahtomedi, South Minneapolis, Apple Valley, Lakeville and Prior Lake. Mr. Johnson served as both the JLSFC Commissioner and Traveling Football Program Commissioner for EVAA, while coaching a team in the league. The following year, Mr. Johnson renamed the league the Minnesota Developmental Football League ('MDFL") and additional cities were added. Mr. Johnson served as the MDFL Commissioner for three seasons. Since 2003, the MDFL has grown to include several additional cities (Burnsville, Chaska, Eagan and Shakopee). In August 2007, Mr. Johnson was asked to serve as the President of the Eastview High School football booster club by the high schools head coach. Mr. Johnson then created the Eastview Lightning Touchdown Club (ELTC), a 501c(3) non-profit organization, and created several new fundraising programs including the ELTC on-line advertising website, the Kick-Off Bash (now an annual community event) and the Buy-A-Brick, Buy-A-Car, and Buy-A-House programs, which more than doubled the fundraising revenues and funded a lasting community legacy, the Eastview High School Victory Circle. In 2009, Mr. Johnson teamed up with J.D. Pride, a former NFL player and local promotional leader in youth sporting events, to form Pridercise Sports LLC, a company which provides, among other things, football camps, college football testing combines, college campus visits, 7 on 7 passing tournaments, on-line profiles and other college recruiting assistance as well as adult flag football leagues.In addition to the foregoing, Mr. Johnson aspires to utilize his legal knowledge and fundraising experience to help indigenous populations in a significant way (particularly the Lakota, who reside on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota).
