About Me
A graduate of The State University of New York at Oswego, Gary Salmirs serves as CEO of Ironwill Foundation, a nonprofit he founded in 2008 after a trip to the emergency room made him realize he needed to make some lifestyle changes. Overweight by 40 pounds with a clot in an important artery, Salmirs committed himself to a dietary plan designed by a nutritionist. Salmirs also started running regularly and incorporated races, beginning with 5k and 10k distances and working up to marathons and triathlons.
Gary Salmirs created the Ironwill Foundation in order to raise funds and awareness for lesser-known diseases, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, a disorder for which the foundation raised more than $72,000 during a spin-a-thon. More recently, Gary Salmirs initiated Wellness Program through the Ironwill Foundation designed to provide knowledge and skills to lower-income families. These courses include classes on food science, cooking skills, the importance of physical activity, and organic foods, among others.
The Wellness Program also offers lecture series, field trips, walking clubs, soup exchanges, and events where participants can ask a doctor questions. Gary Salmirs resides in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey with his family. Salmirs enjoys reading and counts the works of Michael Pollan among his favorites.
