Boasting a diverse background in real estate acquisition and development, Chuck Horning is both a successful entrepreneur and a devoted environmentalist. Serving as Chairman and CEO of Newport Federal, a California-based investment firm, Chuck Horning maintains diverse property holdings in the continental United States and Hawaii. As owner of the Telluride Ski & Golf Company (Telski), a high-end vacation destination in Colorado, Chuck Horning ensures that all resort expansion projects are implemented with a focus on environmental impact. In 2004, the Telluride Golf Club, one of Telski's main properties, was recognized as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" by Audubon International's educational division. In order to earn this designation, Chuck Horning led Telski through an intensive four-year certification process, demonstrating the company's commitment to wildlife and habitat management, water conservation, environmental planning, reduced chemical usage, as well as educational outreach efforts. In addition to facilitating the Telluride Golf Club's certification, Chuck Horning oversaw the continued implementation of a previously established wetlands restoration project, as well as purchasing a state-of-the-art irrigation system to decrease the amount of water consumed by the golf course. In addition to his professional interest in ecological preservation, Chuck Horning spends as much time as his schedule allows on his ranches in the Northern Sierra Nevada foothills. Situated near Chuck Horning's childhood home, the ranches are spread over 12,000 acres in Butte and Plumas counties. Passionate about wildlife preservation and land restoration, Chuck Horning does not allow hunting on his properties. Additionally, Chuck Horning dedicates a great deal of energy to soil nourishment and anti-erosion practices, rehabilitating earth that had formerly been depleted of vital nutrients. By planting a large number of ponderosa pine, cedar, and black oak trees each year, Chuck Horning further contributes to the overall environmental health of his expansive property. Also maintaining ranches that overlook scenic Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu, Chuck Horning supports Hawaiian land preservation efforts by replacing coconut groves and golden bamboo forests destroyed by previous development.
